BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Troy men's and women's track and field squad will kick off the 2015-16 season on Friday when they head to the CrossPlex in Birmingham for the UAB Blazer Invitational, which will begin at 11 a.m.
"We've been conditioning, training and putting in lots of hard work on the track and in the weight room up until this point, so we're all looking forward to finally being able to compete," head coach Marc Davis said. "It's still early in the season, but I'm confident that our fitness is where it needs to be, so from here on out we'll be sharpening our skills against tough competition almost every weekend until the conference meet."
During the meet Troy will contend against conference rivals ULM and Georgia State, along with in-state competition from UAB, Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jacksonville State.
In the field events, junior All-American Cori Cox will return to competition for the first time since her appearance in the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, where she earned 11th place in the nation in the hammer throw. She will throw the shot on Friday with freshman Indiya Summerville and sophomore Jaevyn Wortham, who placed eighth in the discus at the USA Track and Field Junior National meet last year. Redshirt junior Myles Charley is also poised for a standout season in the men's long and triple jump after earning sixth place at last year's conference meet. He and junior Isaac Jennings will compete in both events this weekend.
In the women's sprints, Troy boasts up-and-coming talent in sophomores Niata Alexander and Sydney Wright. A 2015 Sun Belt Conference finalist in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes, Wright will compete in both events this weekend. Alexander, who ran the fastest 400-meter dash last year for the women in 55.23 seconds, will join Wright in the 200-meter dash, but also race in her marquee event and likely run a leg on the 4x400-meter relay.
The men's sprints will look forward to the return of senior captain Benjamin Martin, who redshirted last year due to injury. Martin, a school record-holder in the 100-meter dash, will compete in the 60 and 200-meter dashes on Friday. He will be joined by freshmen Ryan Jackson and Hakim Montgomery in both races. Junior Cameron Rice, who posted the quickest 200-meter time for the men last year with a 21.40-second effort, will also race the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
In the long sprints, the men will be anchored by a spry group of freshmen: Jordan Howell, Tyson Robinson, John Webb and Courtland White; who are all slated to compete in the 800-meter run and may appear in the to-be-determined 4x400-meter relay lineup. Tiarra Bailey, another freshman long sprinter, will also make her debut as a Trojan in the 800-meter dash on Friday.
Following this weekend, Trojans will travel to the CrossPlex for the next four meets leading up to the conference meet, with the Emory Invitational on deck for the women's team on Sunday, Jan. 24.
