Neal Brown – Practice One
Opening statement…
Day one, the guys were really excited to get back out here. They had a nice day. We've got a bunch of new guys here, I think over 30 guys that had their first practice today. I think a lot of credit has to go to Rafael Horton, our football strength coach. He had those guys ready to go. We went light. We were out here for about an hour and 35 minutes. I thought our guys handled that well. You can tell we have some leadership, Tyler Roberts on defense, I could see him encouraging and being active, and Dalton Bennett on offense, and Brandon Burks. I know we've got some leadership and some good character guys. We've talked about it. We had a 3.1 GPA over the summer, and that is tremendous. We've had guys doing the right thing, so I think our buy-in factor is really high. Now, where we are lacking is our discipline when we get tired, and that showed today. We have little things that equal big things and for us, where we are at with our low scholarship numbers, and our talent level low in certain positions, we have to do the little things right. We have 28 opportunities and we're going to need every one of them.
Â
On the pace of practice…
If you notice the pace of our practice, we'll go really fast and then slow it down with either a teach period or we'll take a break. What we want to do from a time standpoint, if you noticed in the spring we were out here a really long time, but we were only out here every other day, three times per week. So, now, we are in every day mode. It was supposed to go an hour and 30 minutes, and we went an hour and 39. We just need to get a letter better as far as transitions and stuff. We want to be out here light. The NCAA allows us to do some walk-thrus, so a lot of that teaching stuff we can do early in the morning and late at night. We want to play, and you heard me talk about this all summer, we want to be a tempo team. Not a tempo offense. A tempo team. As far as lining up, we were probably as good today as we were at the end of the spring.
