TROY, Alabama – Troy men's golfers Phillip Brennan and Tolver Dozier added to their impressive list of academic accomplishments as the duo were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars on Wednesday.
Brennan and Dozier were two of just 206 NCAA Division I men's golfers to earn the prestigious honor. To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Brennan was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Third Team, while Dozier earned NCAA Elite 89 honors for having the highest GPA among the participants at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship.
Brennan became the 10th Troy student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors (14 different awards) and the first to do so on the at-large team. The at-large pool of student-athletes is by far the largest among the CoSIDA All-America teams as it includes student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
A native of Mobile, Ala., Brennan graduated in May Summa Cum Laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA in mathematics and a minor in physical science. Brennan earned the Navy Health Professions scholarship and will be attending medical school in the fall. Additionally, Brennan received the award for having the highest GPA among graduating male student-athletes at Troy.
On the course, Brennan posted a 74.21 stroke average and helped lead the Trojans to an at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals and a No. 35 national ranking at one point during the season. He was second among the Trojans with seven rounds under par and with four rounds in the 60s during the season.
Dozier graduated in May Summa Cum Laude with a grade-point average of 3.93 in business marketing. He is the first Troy University student-athlete to earn the NCAA Elite 89 Award.
The Dothan, Ala., native became an overnight sensation after he qualified for the NCAA Championship as an individual thanks to an eagle on the first playoff hole of the NCAA New Haven Regional. Dozier birdied three of his final four holes to force the playoff and then hit a 138-yard second shot on the par-4 first hole to hole out and advance to the NCAA Championship.
