OPELIKA, Alabama – The No. 50 Troy men's golf team finished its strong showing at the Tiger Invitational by shooting a 6-over 294 Tuesday at the Grand National Lake Course to secure a second place finish in the event.
The Trojans picked up victories over a pair of teams ranked ahead of them in the latest GolfStat rankings as they were 14 shots better than No. 45 Ole Miss and 32 shots ahead of No. 46 Chattanooga. Troy, who also picked up wins over Sun Belt foes Georgia State and South Alabama, moves to 59-16 on the season after picking up 14 wins at the Tiger Invitational.
Troy led the way with six eagles over the course of the tournament, while the Trojans finished with 54 birdies, second only to Auburn's 67. Troy finished 31-under on the par 5s paced by Phillip Brennan's tournament-leading 10-under.
Jake Tucker picked up his first top 10 finish of the season as he closed with birdies on three of his final seven holes after making four straight bogeys around the turn. Tucker shot a 1-over 73 on the day and 4-under for the tournament to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Fresh off his school-record tying round yesterday, Jared Bettcher made the turn at 2-under after four birdies on the front nine. He dropped in a pair of birdies on the back nine and finished the day at 2-over. Bettcher tied for 16th place overall for his fourth top 25 finish in six tournaments this season.
Phillip Brennan went low for the Trojans in the final round as he finished his round at even par. Brennan found himself 3-over following five holes and at the turn, but sank back-to-back birdies after making the turn and another on No. 14 to even his card. Brennan, who tied for 22nd place, might have had the shot of the tournament as he sank a 60-foot putt for birdie on No. 10.
The Trojans picked up a pair of birdies from Tolver Dozier as he shot a 3-over 75 Tuesday to finish 4-over for the tournament and tied for 25th place. Clayton Vannoy tallied Troy's lone eagle of the day on the way to a 7-over 79 and a tie for 65th place.
Auburn won the team title after finishing 25-under for the event led by individual medalist Michael Johnson's 8-under par.
Troy will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend for the Seminole Intercollegiate Friday thru Sunday.
