2/7/2015 12:35:00 AM | Softball
Troy (1-1) scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Trojans have scored 12 combined runs in the first inning this season. Michelle Phelps drove in the first run of the game with a double to left-center field scoring Hannah Day who reached on a walk. Heather Johnston later drove in two runs to score Khadija Neely and Becca Hartley.
"I told the girls yesterday, after the tough loss, the last seven months that we have worked are going to come into play in how hard we fight tonight," Mullins said. "They came out and were fighting and had each other's backs. I asked them to get better everyday and they got better today."
The Trojans scored five runs in the second inning. Johnston got the scoring started with an RBI double to right-center field. Day would later single to center field to score Kate Benton, who reached on a single and advanced into scoring position by stealing second. Amanda Winters took the first pitch of the following at bat over the left-center field wall for a two-run blast.
Winters and Phelps led the Trojans offensively combining for six hits and five RBIs. Johnston finished the night 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Carli Kayler and Benton picked up their first career hit as a Trojan in the victory, while Kayler picked up her first career RBI.
Florida A&M (0-2) scored two runs in the first inning and added its other two runs in the fourth inning.
Ashley Rainey (1-0) picked up the win for the Trojans in the circle, while Veronica Burse (0-1) took the loss for the Rattlers.
Troy plays a doubleheader Saturday when they face the Buffalo Bulls at 2:30 p.m. and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 5 p.m.
