TROY, Alabama – Richard Shaughnessy has been promoted to director of strength and conditioning at Troy University, Athletic Director John Hartwell announced Monday. Shaughnessy is in his 20th season at Troy where he has served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Trojans' 16 intercollegiate athletic programs.
Â
"Richard is highly respected across the country and is one of the industry leaders in collegiate strength and conditioning," Hartwell said. "It is evident when watching our teams play the impact that Coach Shaughnessy and his staff have had on their development."
Â
A certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Shaughnessy has been instrumental in developing stronger, quicker and more durable athletes at Troy University.
Â
As a testament to Shaughnessy's success as a strength and conditioning coach, the College of Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) inducted him as a Master Strength Coach in May of 2009. This is the highest honor awarded for individuals in the field of strength and conditioning.
Â
He is a certified member of the College Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA), the National Association of Speed and Explosion (NASE) and is a club coach for the United States Weightlifting Federation. He is the state director for both the NSCA and NASE. Shaughnessy has been involved with powerlifting for the past 34 years and has spent the last 24 working with human performance.
Â
Shaughnessy also works with student-athletes after the conclusion of their collegiate playing careers, helping many move on to the professional level. Over the past 15 years, more than 100 of Shaughnessy's student-athletes have had the opportunity to compete at the next level following the conclusion of their careers at Troy University.
Â
In October of 2003, the National Strength and Conditioning Association selected Shaughnessy as one of 18 "Elite" Strength Coaches in the world. The inaugural program created by the NSCA honors achievements and competencies of strength and conditioning specialists by assessing their practical and applied experience, along with their interests and contributions to the profession of strength and conditioning.
