LOXLEY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team will carry a six-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship after shooting a 307 during Tuesday's second round at the Steelwood Country Club. The champion receives the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
"We talked about it last night that we are playing three mini tournaments and our goal was to win day two," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We didn't quite do that day. We had a tough front nine as the wind was really blowing at that time, but we scratched and clawed on the back nine.
"We are going to tee it up tomorrow like it is day one of the tournament and turn tomorrow into a new mini tournament. A couple of holes have given us trouble, but they have really looked relaxed and poised on the back nine both rounds."
Scores were up across the board on Tuesday as the teams hit the course four hours late due to heavy rain Monday night and battled winds that reached gusts of 20-25 miles-per-hour. The average score in the opening round was 307.9 in the opening round and rose to 311 in the second round.
Troy is six shots up on Texas State after the Bobcats shot a 306 in the second round. South Alabama is in third place 14 shots back of Troy, while ULM and UALR round out the top five.
Brooke Spinks is the leader in the clubhouse for the Trojans after she shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday. She is tied for second overall and just one shot behind South Alabama's Ashleigh Ryals for the individual lead. Spinks opened 3-over on the front nine after a birdie and a pair of double-bogeys; however she birdied a pair of holes on the back nine to finish 1-over on that side of the course.
"All spring she has driven the ball so well," Barnes said. "When playing a course like this where the greens are severe and have speed, if you can drive it well and hit it long and straight, it sets you up with a shorter club and you can attack the hole locations."
Becca Horner turned in the best round of the day for the Trojans and the second best in the field as she sunk four birdies – two on the front and two on the back – and finished her day 1-over. Horner shot up the leaderboard into 10th place after entering the day tied for 21st.
Day-one leader Fátima Fernández Cano struggled out of the gate on Tuesday as she was 6-over at the turn. The Trojan freshman rebounded on the back nine with a birdie around three bogeys to finish her round at 8-over. Cano will enter the final round tied four fourth and just two shots off the pace.
Taylor McGraw is also within striking distance of the leaders after she carded a 7-over 79; McGraw is tied for 11th but finds herself just four shots behind Ryals. McGraw was 6-over at the turn before settling down and shooting 1-over on the back nine.
Langley Vannoy was also 7-over on the day with a birdie on No. 9 to find herself tied for 14th place and just three shots out of the top 10.
Troy will be grouped with Texas State and South Alabama for the final round with the first trio set to tee off at 8:55 a.m.
