BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy track and field team will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex this weekend for the second time this season. The Trojans will be competing at the Samford Multi and Invitational on February 7 and continue through the 8th.
"We are definitely looking forward to the weekend," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "We have gotten two great weeks of training in now and feel confident we will have more, if not most, put up their best performances this weekend. We'll be competing against more than 40 teams, so we'll get to see how the athletes do in a large meet."
Friday's schedule will begin with field events at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men's and women's multi as well as the 200-meter dash and 5K. Saturday will begin with running events at 9 a.m., and the long jump will start the field events at 10 a.m.
The team has seen a constant trend of improvement since its first meet of the season at the CrossPlex.
"With so many young athletes returning to a venue for the second time it is a comfort zone that weighs to our advantage," Cunningham said. "We will be back at the CrossPlex for the Sun Belt Championships, so it's great for our athletes to get some more experience in the facility."
Several Trojans finished with their fastest times of the year this past weekend at the TSU Invitational. Julia Ostendorf completed the mile-run in 5:21.79, and Riley Schwietz's 5.83 performance in the 55-meter hurdle placed her in a top-10 conference standing. Hayley Watts also saw her best pole vault of the season with 3.11 meters.
The team's training and preparation is paying off and they hope to see more improvements this weekend in Birmingham, as well as next week at the Sun Belt Championships.
