TROY, Ala. – Troy director of athletics John Hartwell announced on Thursday that tennis assistant coach Rawia Elsisi is being elevated to women's tennis head coach. Troy is still searching for a men's tennis head coach.
"Rawia has proved over the years as a student-athlete and as an assistant coach her dedication and passion for Troy University," Hartwell said. "When the opportunity came about to split the head coaching duties of the men's and women's programs, she immediately came to our minds as the right person to lead our women's program."
Elsisi, a Troy alum, has served as the Trojans' assistant coach for the last two seasons, working mostly with the women's program. In each of those two seasons she has helped the Trojan women to a winning record, including a 17-6 campaign in 2013 that included a 12-match winning streak, the third longest in the nation at the time.
In those two seasons, the Trojans had four All-Sun Belt selections (two singles, two doubles) and had a doubles team in the ITA National Rankings in each season.
Elsisi played for Troy for four years from 2006-09, spending the majority of her career in the number one spot of the Trojans' lineup. Elsisi helped the Trojans to a winning record in each of her four seasons after coming to Troy following a very successful junior international career.
A native of Cairo, Elsisi was the number one ranked junior player in Egypt and won many national tournaments before moving to the United States to play collegiate tennis at Troy. She competed for Egypt in the 2001 Fed Cup in Turkey, posting a 2-1 record during the premier team competition in international women's tennis.
After her collegiate playing career, Elsisi began her coaching career as a volunteer instructor at local tennis clubs from coast to coast, including the Malibu (CA) Summer Tennis Camp, the ITA International Tennis Academy (FL), the Bridges Family Resort and Tennis Club (VT) and the Advantage Tennis Academy (CA).
In addition to an accomplished tennis coach and player, Elsisi was an exceptional student, earning both her bachelor's degree and master's degree from Troy University.
She earned her bachelor's in sport and fitness management with a minor in business administration in 2008, doing so in less than four years. Elsisi was a four-time Sun Belt Commissioner's List honoree and won the Sorrell Award, given to Troy's graduating female student-athlete with the highest GPA every year.
Elsisi earned her master's degree in sport and fitness management with a concentration in sport administration in 2010 and has completed numerous professional presentations and had articles publicized since then. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Troy since earning her master's degree.
