Fennvik Tied for Third, Trojans Three Strokes off Lead at SBC Championships

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Senior Sara Fennvik shot an even-par, 72, to lead the Troy women's golf team to a third-place standing at the conclusion of the Sun Belt Championship's opening round on Monday at the Fighting Joe Golf Course.
The Trojans stood neck-and-neck with FIU and Middle Tennessee approaching the final few holes, and finished the day at 13-over, 301, just three strokes off the lead and one behind the second place Blue Raiders.
Fennvik, who will close out her collegiate career Wednesday, got off to a good start in her first 18 holes with an even-par, 72, to lead the five Trojans. Fennvik dropped just one bogey over her first nine holes to make the turn at one-over. She then birdied the first and fourth, before bogeying the sixth to finish the day tied for third just one stroke off the individual lead.
Sophomore Brooke Spinks saw her score dip as low as two-under, but finished the day at four-over, 76. Spinks got to two-under through the first five holes before dropping a bogey on the 15th to make the turn at one-under. She would go on to bogey the second, double bogey the fourth, and bogey on the eighth and ninth to finish the day at four-over, tied for 13th.
Langley Vannoy also finished the day at four-over, tied for 13th as she struggled on the first nine holes before gaining ground on the back nine. The sophomore bogeyed holes 10, 15, 16, and 17 to make the turn at four-over. Vannoy then birdied the second and bogeyed the eighth to finish the day four-over, 76.
Sofia Bjorkman, who entered the tournament tied for third in the Sun Belt's statistical rankings, carded a five-over, 77, to finish day one tied for 21. Bjorkman bogeyed holes 12 and 13, and birdied the 18th to make the turn at one-over. The senior went on to birdie one more hole, and shoot at least one-over on four others to finish the day at 77.
Sydney Conrad turned in Troy's dropped score with a 13-over, 85.
UALR's Sofia Berglund and FIU's Meghan MacLaren both turned in one-under par performances to lead the field of individuals, while FIU holds just a three stroke lead over the Trojans entering Tuesday's second round.
Troy will be grouped with the Blue Raiders and Golden Panthers during Tuesday's round, while Conrad will tee-off first for the Trojans at 8:45. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.com.
