MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy track and field team opened up the 2013 outdoor season by competing in a dual meet on the campus of South Alabama on Wednesday. Several Trojans won events and posted quality performances to begin the season.
“It was a great overall performance,” said assistant coach Shawn Williams. "We got victories in several events, and some of the new kids got some great experience that will help them down the road. This was a great low-key meet to open the outdoor season.
Julia Ostendorf took home the mile run, completing the race in 5:29.69. Right behind her was Morgan Paulson, finishing in 5:31.10 and taking second. Paulson wasn't done, winning the 3000-meter run by over 20 seconds, completing the event in 12:17.64.
Jasmine Patton dominated the 100-meter hurdles, winning by more than a second, completing the race in 14.23 seconds. Lacey Marcus came in third at 16.00 seconds.
"Jasmine ran an excellent race to open up the outdoor season," Wiliams said. "We're going to rely on her all season as a veteran leader that performs well in big races."
The trio of Brynn Forsythe, Nicole Studstill and Shayla Smith took the top three spots in the hammer throw, with Forsythe pacing the field at 48.46 meters. Forsythe would also finish second in the shot put with a toss of 11.82 meters.
Ashley Hall and Patton went 2-3 in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.60 and 12.73, while Aleeza Kempton and Amiracle Watson finished second and third in the 300-meter at 41.63 and 42.75.
Bree Handy and Luv Dean took third and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, with Handy finishing in 47.65 seconds and Dean completing the race in 48.81 seconds.
Hayley Watts competed well in the pole vault, taking second with a vault of 3.10 meters. Alexus Cobbs placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.40 meters and went on to also take third in the triple jump at 10.82 meters.
On the men's side, Benjamin Martin and Lance Holley grabbed the top two spots in the 100-meter dash at 11.58 seconds and 11.79 seconds. Troy took the top four spots in the 300-meter dash, led by Jordan Landburg at 34.12 seconds.
Thaddeus Curtis won both the 110-meter and the 300-meter hurdles. He narrowly edged out the competition in the 110-meter with a time of 15.02 seconds, but dominated the 300-meter competition at 38.83 seconds.
The 4x100 meter relay squad of Neko Freeman, Jordan Landburg, Martin and Phillip Pritchett came out on top with a time of 41.41 seconds, more than a second ahead of the second place finisher. Landburg, Freeman, Chaun Lynn and Douglas Dyer would team up for a victory in the sprint relay, completing the event in 3:38.31, nearly five seconds ahead of the competition.
Larry Henry grabbed first in the high jump with a leap of 1.99 meters, while Myles Charley and Lynn battled in the long jump, with Charles edging out Lynn at 6.95 meters.

"Like with every meet, there is some good and some things left to work on," Williams finished. "I feel like this team is in a great place to begin the outdoor campaign."
The Trojans next compete at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., from March 14-16.
