Troy Notebook: Ending The Nail-Biter Blues

Nine of the last 12 losses for Troy have come by seven points or less, which has made for numerous heart-breaking finishes. The Trojans came out on the winning side of a close game with Saturday's 34-33 win over South Alabama.
Last season Troy edged Florida International after Will Scott kicked a 42-yard field goal with 11 second remaining. The Trojans had trailed by as many as 16 points in that game. On Saturday, Troy's first deficit came with 48 seconds left on the clock.
ECLIPSING THE CENTURY MARK
Troy had a player eclipse the 100-yard mark in rushing and receiving on Saturday.
Freshman running back Brandon Burks rushed for 100 yards for the first time in his career. Senior Eric Thomas surpassed the 100-yard mark in receiving for the fifth time in his career.
The Trojans hadn't accomplished the feat since Nov. 3, 2012 against Tennessee.
DEFENSE FINDS A WAY
The Troy defense stopped South Alabama on fourth-and-short at its own 5-yard line in the third quarter. It was the second fourth down stop of the game for the Trojans and a crucial one as it kept the Jaguars, who trailed by 10 at the time, out of the end zone.
It was the first time the Trojans defensive unit had made multiple fourth-down stops for the first time since Sept. 22, 2012, at North Texas.
MAKING A 'HOLMES' IN THE END ZONE
Troy receiver Bryan Holmes entered his sophomore season with just one career catch and no touchdowns. It hasn't taken him long to correct that statistic in 2013. Holmes caught his first career touchdown pass in the Trojans second game of the season against Savannah State, a 39-yarder. He caught another the next week against Arkansas State.
Against South Alabama, Holmes found the end zone twice. The first was a 9-yard pass from Deon Anthony in the first quarter. The second came on a 10-yard strike from Robinson in the third quarter.
SWEET HOME ALABAMA
With the win over South Alabama, Troy is now the only FBS team in the state of Alabama with multiple wins over in-state opponents.
The Trojans defeated UAB in the season-opener, 34-31. This is the second consecutive year that Troy has beaten both UAB and South Alabama.
