PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – The Troy men's golf team (296-281-577) turned the tables on day two of the Golfweek Progam Challenge and used a seven-under par performance to catapult them to a fourth place standing heading into Tuesday's final round of play.
After shooting a team score 296 in Sunday's opening round, the team bettered that mark by 15 strokes with a 281 to record the lowest team score on the day.
Tolver Dozier (71-69-140) began play on the 10th by carding two bogeys and two birdies to send him to even-par through 11 holes. A birdie on the fourth improved his score to one-under, before carding an eagle on the ninth to finish the day at 69, three-under par tied for fifth.
Freshman Jacob Harper (75-68-143) improved on his three-over par, 75 score in Sunday's round by finishing round two with a four-under par performance. Harper started the round a bit shaky carding two bogeys and two birdies, but found his stroke on the final nine holes, carding four birdies to improve his individual standing to a tie for 14th entering Tuesday's final round.
After finishing Sunday's round tied for 32nd, Jake Tucker (74-72-146) used an even-par, 72 to improve to a tie for 24th. Tucker carded a double bogey on the 18th hole to make the turn at one-over and eventually carded two more bogeys to head into the final two holes at two-over. But, birdies on the eighth and ninth sent Tucker back to even-par to complete day two.
Phillip Brennan's (76-72-148) day went south on the fourth hole after he recorded a double bogey, but a string of birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth allowed him to complete the day at even-par, tied for 30th.
Wil Clowdus (77-73-150) had the chance to finish the day at one-under par, but a double bogey on the ninth and final hole sent him to one-over, and a dropped score on the men's total.
The seven-under par performance by the men tied James Madison for the lowest score of the tournament thus far with a 281. Campbell (282-290-572) enters Tuesday's round as the team leader with a total score of 572, just five strokes ahead of the Trojans.
The Troy women's team (301-308-609) dropped two spots to fifth after firing a 24-over par, 308 team score in Monday's round.
Senior Sofia Bjorkman (67-75-142), just a day after firing a tournament-low 67, shot a four-over par 75, but will cling to a tie for first heading into the final round Tuesday. Bjorkman began play by carding four straight bogeys. A birdie on the seventh made way for a three-over par score at the turn, and a bogey on the 18th and final hole sent her back to four-over to finish the day with a 75.
Just a day after opening the season with an even-par round, Langley Vannoy (71-78-149) struggled on the front nine and eventually finished the day at seven-over to drop her to a tie for 11th in the standings. Vannoy carded a bogey and two double bogeys on the front nine to make the turn at five-over, and bogeys on the 11th and 15th allowed her to finish with a seven-over par, 78.
Senior Sara Fennvik (86-74-160) improved her day two total by 12 strokes as she finished the day with a three-over par performance. Fennvik completed the round with five bogeys and one double bogey, but rebounded with four birdies to finish with a score of 74, tied for 37th.
Taylor McGraw (81-81-162) matched her day one performance with a 10-over par, 81. The sophomore entered the final hole at just six-over, but a four-over par hole on the 18th led to a 10-over par day to drop her to a tie for 46th heading into Tuesday.
Sydney Conrad (82-83-165) shot a 12-over, 83 which was dropped due to it being the lowest team score.
Campbell (286-288-574) carded a four-over, 288 to lead the field of 12 in Monday's round, and head into the final round with a 28 stroke advantage over second place Central Arkansas (304-298-602).
Sydney Conrad will kick off action for the women at 7:30 Tuesday morning, with McGraw, Fennvik, Vannoy and Bjorkman to follow in 10 minute increments.
Clowdus will tee-off at 8:20 for the Trojans, with Brennan, Dozier, Harper and Tucker to follow.
