MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – No. 29 North Texas and No. 47 Middle Tennessee State both shot a 298 on Monday to lead the field of 11 in day one of the 54-hole 2012 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals.
Although the 298 carded by the Mean Green and Blue Raiders was 10-over par, it was still good enough for an eight stroke lead over South Alabama.
Troy, who carded a 317 for an eighth place standing after day one, was led by Tolver Dozier (76).
Although Dozier ended the first 18 holes at four-over par, he still is only five strokes off the leader Ty Spinella (71) of North Texas. The native of Dothan, Ala. was at three-over par after just five holes of play, but a birdie on the 16th sent him back to two-over. Dozier then alternated between birdies and bogeys on the remaining 11 holes to finish the day tied for 11th at four-over par.
Jake Tucker (78), also a freshman and close competitor with Dozier, finished the day tied for 23rd with a six-over par 78 performance. Tucker found quick success on the 11th hole and birdied a par four, but a bogey on the 12th and triple bogey on the 13th sent Tucker back to three-over. A bogey on the 18th sent him to four-over, and a tough final hole on the ninth dropped him to a six-over par finish.
Senior Ricky Casko (80), who entered the tournament with a 72.65 scoring average, carded an eight-over par 80 to finish tied for 32nd after day one. Casko never struggled with anything more than a bogey, but also never carded anything better than par. Four bogeys on the first nine and four on the last nine holes made for an eight-over par finish for the Cartersville, Ga. native.
Sophomore Kyle Thommesen (83) was decent on the first nine with a five-over par performance, but a four-over par on the fifth hole and bogeys on the sixth and ninth made for an 11-over par finish, tied for 40th.
Wil Clowdus, who had his best performance of the season in last weekend's Wolfpack Spring Open, could not carry that success into the tournament as he finished day one tied for 50th at 14-over par.
With the second round set to begin Tuesday morning, the Trojans will look to cut into the lead held by the Mean Green and Blue Raiders. Troy sits 19 strokes off the lead, but only nine behind fourth place Arkansas-Little Rock.
