TROY, Ala. – At 8 a.m. Monday morning, 11 teams will take to the Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals, Ala. to kick off the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship.
The Fighting Joe course at the Robert Trent Jones Shoals golf course will welcome all members of the conference to determine this year's champion in a three round, three day event.
The Denver Pioneers claimed their first ever team title in last year's weather shortened event. Last year's runner-up, North Texas, returns with the highest ranking (#29 on GolfWeek.com) of any team in the SBC. The Mean Green enter the championship on the heels of its best performance of the season, a 22-under par second-place finish at the Woodlands Intercollegiate.
Troy enters the tournament with the fourth-best scoring average in the league with a 293.43. Senior Ricky Casko, who will be playing his last event as a Trojan, enters as the highest ranked Trojan in the SBC with a 72.65 scoring average. His best performance of the season came just two weeks ago at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate where he placed fifth, just one stroke away from participating in a four-player playoff to determine the individual champion.
Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker, who have been near identical in the results so far this season, enter ranked 16th and 20th, respectively. Both golfers have played in nine events and 26 rounds, and also share the same low finish, a tie for 15th.
Wil Clowdus, who is coming off his best finish of tied for 21st at the Wolfpack Spring Open, sits 38th in the SBC with a 75.30 scoring average. Kyle Thommesen is just two spots behind with a 75.43.
No. 47 Middle Tennessee State heads into the 54-hole tournament as the best team in the conference, led by No. 78 Hunter Green, who holds a 71.80 scoring average.
Carlos Ortiz represents the Mean Green with a No. 92 ranking by Golfweek.com. Louisiana-Lafayette enters ranked No. 64, and the Jaguars of South Alabama enter as the No. 95 team in the country.
Thommesen will be the first Trojan to tee off, for a scheduled time of 8:40. Casko is slated for a 9:16 start, which is the latest of any golfer in the tournament.
