The offseason accolades continue to roll in for the Troy University softball team, and this week's news is perhaps the biggest of all. Freshman pitcher Jaycee Affeldt has been selected to join the Canadian Junior National Team.
The Junior National Team will represent Canada at the 2011 ISF IX Junior Women's World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa from December 6-17, 2011.
“Obviously this is a tremendous achievement for Jaycee,” said Troy assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Sharon O'Mara. “I know how much work she has put into this and we are all so happy of her.”
The Maple Ridge, British Columbia native was one of just 17 players selected to the squad. You read on TroyTrojans.com back in early August about Affeldt's time at the Scotiabank Canadian Open, but since then she has been lighting up international softball in Canada.
In last month's Canadian Open Fastpitch Futures Gold (U19) International Championship, the final qualifier for selection to the Canadian Junior National Team, Affeldt led her Surrey Storm 93 team to a second place finish, falling 4-3 in 10 innings in the championship game.
During the 11-game tournament, Affeldt made her presence felt, earning MVP honors despite her team not winning the title. In 53 innings pitched, she recorded 53 strikeouts, but also made a large contribution in the batter's box.
Affeldt hit .457 from the third spot in the Storm lineup, ripping 16 base hits in 11 games. She posted seven RBI, four doubles and was walked six times.
“This is a great chance for Troy to have one of its student-athletes represent the university as a whole on an international stage,” said O'Mara. “And we know Jaycee is going to do a great job and make us proud.”
In the mean time, Affeldt will join the Trojans as they prepare for the 2012 season with 10 fall exhibition games. The first games are slated for Friday, September 23 at the Trojan Softball Complex.
