BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (TroyTrojans.com) – A pair of Troy University track and field student-athletes took to competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships East Preliminary on Friday evening, with one moving through to the next round of competition.
Senior Stanley Arukwe ran twice on Friday night, in two different events, narrowly missing qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in the 100-meters. The senior finished 21st overall in the quarterfinals of the 100-meters with a time of 10.54 seconds. The time was just 0.13 seconds short of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships, as the senior was the only Sun Belt Conference runner to qualify for the quarterfinal round.
Meanwhile, Arukwe had to turn around and run the 200-meter preliminary race just mere moments later, qualifying for the quarterfinal round to be contested on Saturday. The senior qualified 22nd in the event with a time of 21.37 seconds, finishing 0.07 seconds out of the top 20. Arukwe needs to finish in the top three of his heat, or run one of the fastest three times outside of the top nine to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in Des Moines.
Junior Terrell Irons was also in competition for the first time in the East Preliminary, hitting the pits in the triple jump. Although he did not make the cut for the NCAA National Championships, the junior had one of his better performances on his approach; finishing with a distance of 14.80 meters; missing the distance by 0.45 meters.
“It was another good day of competition for our student-athletes,” TROY Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jill Lancaster said. “Stanley (Arukwe) just missed punching his ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 100-meters, but I felt like that motivated him for the 200-meters. He ran a solid time with a slight tactical error that is easily corrected before his next race, and I am looking forward to seeing him race tomorrow. He will run the 200-meters after he runs the 4x100-meter relay tomorrow, and I believe this will be to his benefit since our team takes such pride in this event.
“Terrell (Irons) opened up with a solid jump and then fouled his next two attempts; however, he was faster than he has ever been on the runway. He improved all season, and it showed over the last two competitions. We look forward to him returning next year, and being able to put the speed to use to make it to the championships. Once again the student-athletes represented the program in competition the 'True Trojan Way.' I could not be prouder and I am excited about tomorrow.”
The Trojans return to completion on Saturday with Arukwe in the 200-meters and the team running the 4x100-meter relay. Live stats and live video will be provided, with the link found on the schedule page.
