MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (TroyTrojans.com) - The final day of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships produced an individual champion on the men's side; while the Trojan men climbed to fifth overall in the standings with 84.5 points - just four points out of a top four finish. Meanwhile, the women finished ninth with 31.5 points; as they competed without sophomore Ja-Courtney Alexander who was lost to injury just days before the meet.
Terrell Irons became the second jumper in the last four years on the men's side to capture a conference title for the Trojans. He joins former Trojan and record holder O'Darien Bassett in that category. The junior finished the competition with a jump of 15.45 meters (50-08.25), achieving the jump on his third attempt and then matching it on his fifth attempt. He finished 0.04 meters ahead of ULM's Josh Howard. The win by Irons earned the Trojans 10 points on the day in the overall team competition.
Meanwhile, in the high jump, junior Larry Henry finished tied for third overall as he cleared 2.01 meters (6-07.00), but did so on his final jump. He finished tied with Toms Anderson of Western Kentucky; while Clint Broussard of ULM cleared the exact height as Henry; but did so on his first attempt on the afternoon to capture the overall title.
Henry earned 5.50 points for the Trojans in the high jump, but he was not the only athlete to earn points in the competition, as senior Grant Bullington scored for the second time in the championships. The senior, already scoring in the decathlon, picked up three valuable points in the high jump as he cleared a height of 1.91 meters (6-03.25).
The first event in the field competition, the hammer throw, scored three points for the Trojans as sophomore Cody Bahrke finished sixth overall with a distance of 52.18 meters (171-02.00). The event set the tone for the remainder of the day for the Trojans, as they scored in nearly every event they participated in on the men's side.
While the men were scoring points to start the day in field competitions, the women were matching them through two events. Freshman Karen Wyatt scored in her first Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships, finishing seventh and earning two points in the hammer competition. Wyatt finished with a distance of 47.77 meters (156-09.00) on the afternoon.
Freshman Megan Schunuelle also scored in her first championship meet as she finished seventh in the javelin competition, earning a pair of points for the Trojan women. The freshman recorded a distance of 38.84 meters (127-05.00).
The Trojan men earned 12 points in the javelin as junior Martins Pildavs finished second in the event in his first-ever conference championship meet. The junior finished with a distance of 69.82 meters, which was good enough for a track record until eventual champion Ignacio Guerra of WKU recorded a distance of 76.76 meters to set a track and meet record. Meanwhile, sophomore Matt Braswell earned four points for the Trojans in the event as he finished fifth with a distance of 63.07 meters.
On the track, the competition started with the 4x100-meter relay competition and both teams scored points for the Trojans. The team of Ariel Cavazos, Amiracle Watson, Ashley Hall and Adria Hill were able to make up the difference with sophomore Ja-Courtney Alexander missing the entire meet with an injury, to finish eighth overall. The team crossed the line in a time of 47.12 seconds to earn a point for the women's side. On the men's side; the team of Neko Freeman, Stanley Arukwe, Thaddeus Curtis and Chris Upshaw made the medal stand with a second place finish in a time of 41.08 seconds. The team finished just 0.15 seconds behind conference champion ULM.
Sophomore Jasmine Patton earned three points for the women in the 100-meter hurdle competition. The sophomore finished sixth in the finals of the event with a time of 14.32 seconds.
Meanwhile, senior Stanley Arukwe was able to make the medal stand in a pair of individual events - marking his third time on the stand on Sunday. The senior finished third in the 100-meters with a time of 10.58 seconds, just 0.003 seconds away from second place. He then finished third in the 200-meters with a time of 21.66 seconds. Meanwhile, sophomore Neko Freeman narrowly missed the medal stand in the 100-meters, as he finished fourth in the event with a time of 10.63 seconds and earned the Trojans five points.
Sophomore Enock Kirui earned points again for the Trojans on Sunday as he finsihed seventh in the 5000-meters. The sophomore crossed the line in a time of 15:07.27, just two seconds behind sixth-place finisher - Chris Mason of Middle Tennessee. The finish earned the Trojans a pair of additional points.
The meet concluded with the 4x400-meter relay and the women's team again scored points for their side. The team of Tiffany Slater, Amiracle Watson, Veronica Bryant and Ashley Hall finished seventh overall with a time of 3:57.31. Meanwhile, on the men's side, the team of Curtis, Arukwe, Upshaw and Shane George finished fifth overall and earned the Trojans four more points with a time of 3:20.19.
The Trojans will now wait until the conclusion of all the conference championships around the country for the qualifiers in the East Preliminary Round to be announced. Student-athletes must finish in the top 48 to be eligible to the regional round.
