DES MOINES, Iowa - Several Troy University student-athletes will test their skills against the best athletes in the country when they participate in the US Track and Field Championships and the US Junior Track and Field Championships, June 23-27 at Drake University.
The competition begins with freshman Brynn Forsythe competing in the women's hammer throw in the juniors competition on Thursday afternoon. She will be followed in comeptition by several athletes on Friday, led by freshman Ja-Courteny Alexander in the 200-meters at 11:05 am, one of two events the freshman qualified in but choose to compete in the 200-meters only - an event in which she is ranked 21st in the country entering the championships.
Alexander will be followed by freshman Matt Braswell, the school record holder, in the juniors javelin at 1 pm and freshman Veronica Bryant in the juniors high jump at 1:10 pm. If Alexander qualifies for the finals of the 200-meters, she will run the finals at 2:30 pm on Friday. Forsythe and Bryant enter the meet ranked 14th in their respective events, while Braswell enters ranked eighth overall.
On Saturday and Sunday, a pair of outgoing seniors will hit the competition field in the US Championships beginning at 4:50 pm when All-America Leander McKenzie competes in the opening round of the 110-meter hurdles. On Sunday, outgoing senior Tiphanie Baker competes in the discus at 12:20 pm, followed by the 110-meter hurdle semifinals and finals at 12:45 pm. Baker enters the competition ranked 16th overall and McKenzie 23rd in the country in the 110-meter hurdles.
One student-athlete noticeably missing from the championships is junior Antonio McLeod, ranked 19th in the country in the 100-meters. He choose not to compete and get himself ready for his final season of competition at Troy University next season.
"This is great opportunity to represent the university and our program against the best United States track and field athletes," Troy University Director of Track and Field Jill Lancaster said. "They have an opportunity to make a USA team like Tawanna Meadows did in 2008. It is a very exciting time for these athletes.
"As Leander and Tiphanie close out their collegiate career, the junior group is just getting started. If this is any indication of what the future holds of those who have traveled to juniors before them (Tiphanie Baker, Norman Austin and Lamar Hicks) the future looks bright."
