HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The Troy University women's golf team had a solid opening day at the fourth annual UALR Women's Golf Classic on Monday and the Trojans are in position to post a top five finish with another good round of play today.
Troy posted scores of 305-302 on the par 72, 5,999-yard, Diamante Country Club course and is just four shots out of fifth entering the final round of play.
“We played pretty well on Monday and we put ourselves in position to have a good finish,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “If we can stay focused on making every shot, there is no reason to think that we can't break 300 on Tuesday and give ourselves a chance to finish in the top five.”
Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee holds the lead after the first day of play. The Blue Raiders posted scored of 291-297 and lead Oral Roberts (299-292=591) by three shots entering the final round of play. Host UALR is five shots behind the leaders after rounds of 305-288.
Crystal Reeves of Oral Roberts holds a one-shot lead in individual play entering the final round. Her score of two-under par 73-69=142 gives her a slim lead over Ashley Haggard of Middle Tennessee who is at one-under par after rounds of 68-75.
Four other players are three shots off the lead entering the final round.
Senior Desirae Zine (Vaccaville, Cal.) leads the Trojans with a five-over par score of 149. She is tied for 13th place overall and is seven shots behind the tournament leader.
Sophomore Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) posted the best round of the day on Monday for Troy, shooting an even-par 72 in the opening round, but she struggled to an eight-over score of 80 in the second round. She is tied for 28th entering the final round with a score of 152.
Junior Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) is tied for 37th with freshman teammate Sofia Bjorkman (Vanersborg, Sweden). Balkcom shot rounds of 76-79 to finish the first day at 11-over par 155. Bjorkman posted scored of 82-73 to also finish the first day at 155.
Senior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) is tied for 63rd entering the final round of play after posting scores of 84-76=160.
