BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team will look to rebound from a tough mid-week doubleheader when they travel to Samford University this weekend for the Magic City Classic.
The Trojans (6-3) had a tough outing on Tuesday, losing both games of a road doubleheader at Kennesaw State. The Trojans dropped the first contest, 5-1, and the second 17-9.
One bright spot on the day was freshman Courtney Cherry. In game two, the Dothan, Ala. native blasted her first and second career home runs. She finished the game 2-for-3 with 5 RBI.
Cherry leads a very potent offensive attack for the Trojans. She is batting .423 with 12 RBI and a .769 slugging percentage in just nine games. Those numbers are tops for the Trojans who are hitting .311 as a team this season.
The Trojan pitching staff is being led by Ashlyn Williams who enters the weekend with a 5-2 record and five complete games. Williams has fanned 71 batters and walked just nine in 45.1 innings of work this year. She currently stands two victories away from tying the school record for wins in a career.
The Trojans will take on Alabama State at 1:15 p.m. and UAB at 3:30 p.m. on Friday to kick off their weekend. Troy will then play a single game on Saturday against Nicholls State at 11:00 a.m. The Trojans will close out the tournament with a contest against the host Samford Bulldogs at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday.
