AVONDALE, La. – The Troy University Men's Golf team withstood tough weather conditions on Tuesday at the TPC Louisiana outside New Orleans, posting the only team round of the day at even par to move into fourth place in the Mardi Gras Invitational, hosted by the University of New Orleans.
The strong finish for the Trojans allowed Troy to move up from seventh place and finish one-shot behind the host team for third place.
San Diego overtook North Carolina State in a battle of ranked teams to win the overall team title. The Toreros closed with a final round score of 293 to top the Wolfpack by three shots. USD finished with a six-over score of 870.
San Diego's Alex Ching, who was one of two players to tie the course record on Monday with a score of 64, tied for the low round on Tuesday with a 69 to take individual medalist honors. He finished the tournament with a nine-under par score of 207, six shots better than second place finisher Brad Revell of N.C. State, who closed with a three-over par 74 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at three-under par.
Troy sophomore Rourke Van Der Spuy tied Ching for the low round on Tuesday, posting a 69 to move into a tie for eighth place overall with a one-over par score of 217.
“It was really windy and cold out there today, definitely different than it was on Monday,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “We were six or seven under par at one point today, but the weather caught up with us at the end. We played 18 in three over par.”
Troy did most of its damage in the tournament on the par threes. Van Der Spuy led the field with a four-under par on the short holes, with teammate Justin Eaves right behind at three-under. Van Der Spuy also tied with Ching for the most birdies in the tournament with 15.
As a team, the Trojans were second to San Diego with 51 birdies in the event.
“We played really well and made a ton of birdies,” Terry said. “We made a lot of putts. They knew they had a chance coming down the stretch. If we had played better over the first nine holes of the tournament we probably would have won.”
Besides Van Der Spuy, Eaves finished in 18th place in the tournament with a five-over par score of 221. Chase Whitehead was one shot further back in a tie for 19th. Reid Merritt tied for 31st after shooting even par in the final round and Zach Portemont finished tied for 37th.
The Trojans will be back in action starting March 4 at the USF Invitational in Dade City, Fla.
