STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Troy Trojans hit the road to take on two Mississippi schools this weekend, their first and only trip to that state this season.
Troy (4-1) kicks off their weekend travel Friday under the lights against unbeaten Mississippi State (4-0). The two schools have never faced each other, and MIssissippi State is only the fourth SEC school the Trojans have taken on in school history.
Head coach Chris Bentley and his Trojans are fresh off a 15-0 record-breaking win over Alabama State, and have prepared all week during practice to be ready for a challenging SEC opponent.
“We will have to be organized defensively and capitalize on our chances in the attack if we expect to get a good result,” Bentley said.
During practice, Bentley is trying to get the team to reach their highest potential, and he took a good look at players in different positions to mix the field up and try some new things.
The Trojans are going to be put to the test, and have their talent challenged during a tough matchup with MSU and its young roster.
“Mississippi State is a much improved SEC side with a lot of strong newcomers that will make them dynamic in the attack,” Bentley said.
The Bulldogs are welcoming Troy for their first home game of the year. Mississippi State is off to its best start in school history.
The Trojans continue their Mississippi tour, with their final stop in Itta Bena to face Mississippi Valley State - the reigning SWAC conference champions.
The two schools have faced each other five times with the Trojans leading the series 3-1.
MVSU is not a team the Trojans can overlook as they press on toward conference play.
“Mississippi Valley always gives us a good test, so we are expecting nothing different,” Bentley said.
Troy is set to kick off at 7 pm in Starkville, MS on Friday night. Sunday, they will take on MVSU at 1 pm.
Bentley says this weekend is a future preview for his Trojans.
“The weekend should really give us an idea of where we are at this point, and what we need to do to get ready for conference.“
