Trojans Set To Face Owls
2/7/2009 6:00:00 AM | Basketball (W)
After a long day of travel, the Troy University women's basketball team arrived in South Florida earlier today and will take the court for a Sun Belt Conference game against Florida Atlantic at 4 p.m.
The Trojans had their flight out of Montgomery canceled on Friday and had to bus to Atlanta late in the evening before catching an early morning flight to Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday. The team arrived at its hotel just hours before tipoff.
The Trojans (10-12, 5-7) come into today's contest having won two of their last three games, including a 74-69 victory over Arkansas State at Trojan Arena on Wednesday night. Junior Alyce Shearing led all scorers with a career-high 26 points in the win as the Trojans held on in the second half shooting 56 percent (14-25) from the field and 19 of 22 from the free-throw line.
Senior Kylie Morrissy scored 14 points on Wednesday night. She's been the most consistent scorer for the Trojans this year, and she ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring at 16.5 points per game. Morrissy led all scorers with 20 points in the Trojans 62-53 win over FAU on January 6. Sophomore Donette McNair also contributes from her forward position, leading the team in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game. She is second in scoring at 11.8 points per game.
FAU (9-11, 6-6) has won five of its last seven games, but is coming off a 65-55 loss at New Orleans on Wednesday. The Owls struggled in the second half hitting just 10-of-30 from the field and making just two three-pointers. FAU led by as many as 10 in the first half before UNO went on a 12-2 run to even things up, tying it 29-29 at halftime.
The game will be part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) National Girls and Women in Sports Day and "Pink Zone" event. The WBCA event is a national event that takes place annually in February at colleges and universities nationwide.
The Miami HEAT dancers will be the main attraction at the game, with a special performance at halftime. The dancers also will be available to sign autographs prior to the start of the women's game - beginning at 4pm.
Today's game will be broadcast live on WTBF-FM with Barry McKnight and Ricky Hazel providing the action.
