TROY, Ala. ? The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee held its February meeting on Tuesday night.
The meeting opened with Eric Williamson, Director of Promotion for Troy Athletics, speaking about the upcoming WBCA Pink Zone initiative.
The Pink Zone initiative, formerly known as Think Pink, is an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities.
Troy University will do its part in raising awareness on February 11th when the Trojans women's basketball team takes on Middle Tennessee. The Trojans are trying to pack the stands at Trojan Arena.
Everyone in attendance will be asked to donate $1 to the initiative. If the arena sells out and everyone donates a dollar, the Trojans will raise $4,000 for this very worthy cause.
Williamson was in attendance at the SAAC meeting in order to make the committee well aware of the cause, and to ask for their help in getting all of Troy's student-athletes to attend.
Next, the committee had its monthly educational discussion. This month the issues surrounding Michael Phelps were discussed.
The committee talked about the standards that athletes are held to as role models.
Next, the upcoming Read Across America campaign was discussed.
Read Across America is a program that is dedicated to motivating students to enjoy reading.
On March 2nd, many student-athletes will read to students at Charles Henderson Middle School.
The committee also discussed the upcoming Relay for Life, which be held on March 20th.
Troy's student-athletes will have a team in the event and hope to raise $1,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society. A Relay for Life table will be at the Pink Zone game to collect donations for this cause.
Finally, on February 5th, 180 student-athletes will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game for maintaining a 3.0 GPA last semester.
The next SAAC meeting will be held on March 18th at 7 p.m. in Room 342 of the stadium tower.
