Two games. Two wins. Day one of the Trojans Softball Classic was a success for the Trojans.
Ashlyn Williams took the mound for the Trojans in the last game of the night, and Williams struck out 17 batters. Allison Moore pitched game one for Troy, and she struck out 10.
The Trojans (12-5) used those strikeouts to beat Southeastern Louisiana in the 4 p.m. game, 6-0. Troy came back on the field in the 6 p.m. game and knocked off Appalachian State 4-1.
"You can't feel much better than I feel right now," Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. "We had quality performances out of both of our pitchers. Southeastern Louisiana has always had a quality hitting club, and Allison Moore came in and got a complete game shutout. Then Ashlyn (Williams) did a great job of keeping hitters off balance."
Williams' 17 strikeouts in one game is just two shy of the school's record of 19.
Davis said the Trojans hit the ball well too in both games.
"We have really just been working on our mental approach to hitting," Davis said. "It was just a great night with a lot of line drives and a lot of quality swings."
Heidi Johnson led all hitters in the Southeastern Louisiana (6-4) game. Johnson was two-for-four with a double and a home run.
Kala Moore added a triple in the game as well.
Allison Moore only gave up two hits while striking out 10 in the complete game effort.
In the Appalachian State (4-6) game, Tasha Elmore led Troy going two-for-three. Elmore and Hayden Gann both posted a double in the game as well.
In the first game of the day, Appalachian State and Southeastern Louisiana faced off to start the Classic.
The Lions knocked off Appalachian State 4-1.
Bailey Zievert took the mound for the Lions. Zievert gave up nine hits and struck out four, and the Lions defense held the Mountaineers to just one run.
Both Zievert and the Mountaineers' pitcher, Moose Yancy, pitched a complete game against each other.
Brittany Gaston of Appalachian State led all hitters in the game, going three-for-three.
Play resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in the Trojans Softball Classic. Game times are at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.
