Trojans Host Denver Saturday
1/30/2009 6:00:00 AM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans have been a streaky team over their last 10 games this season, winning five in a row and then dropping four in a row in the previous nine games. However, with their victory over North Texas Wednesday night on the road they hope to start another winning streak when they host the University of Denver at Trojan Arena Saturday night.
The game tips off at 5:15 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team, and can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM with Buddy Johnson providing the play-by-play.
The only time this season that Troy (9-11, 4-6 Sun Belt) has not either won back-to-back games or lost back-to-back games occured after the season opener with Georgia Tech and during a three-game stretch that involved a home game against Spring Hill College back on December 13. The Trojans started the season off with a loss to Georgia Tech, then reeled off back-to-back victories over Austin Peay and Jacksonville State. The Spring Hill contest, a victory by the Trojans, was sandwiched between a two-game losing streak and a three-game losing streak.
The Trojans will face a talented Denver (11-9, 6-3 Sun Belt) team that is under the direction of a new coaching staff this season. They lead the all-time series 3-1 against Troy, including winning last season 77-76 at Magness Arena when the Trojans missed a last-second opportunity. The Pioneers enter tonight's game, winners of their last two home Sun Belt Conference games; defeating WKU 66-50 (first time in school history) and South Alabama 61-56 (in overtime).
Meanwhile, Troy enters the game fresh off am 80-78 overtime victory against North Texas at The Super Pit (first ever win there for the Trojans), ending a five-game conference road losing streak. In that contest, Brittnie Davis recorded a career-high 17 points, while Tenia Manuel came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points and grab a career-high 11 rebounds. The Trojans erased a 13-point halftime deficit en route to the victory.
For the season, the Trojans are led by Kylie Morrissy, averaging 16.8 points per game, and Donette McNair scoring 11.8 points and grabbing eight rebounds per game this season.
This will be the only meeting this season between the two teams in the regular season.
