HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Troy had to come back again on Wednesday, this time in the first half, before holding Southern Miss scoreless through the entire second half and two overtimes for the 1-1 tie.
The Golden Eagles (3-0-1) got a goal in the 11th minute from Mallory Barnes to take an early first half lead.
Troy (1-0-2) answered back on a play very similar to Friday's game-tyer, when freshman Katie Cooper set up sophomore Jill Pinder after a great run down the right side with a cross into the box that Pinder re-directed into the goal for the equalizer in the 40th minute.
The goal is Pinder's fourth in four games, putting her just one behind the highest total scored by an individual player for Troy in 2007.
Seventy hard-fought minutes later the teams left the pitch with a tie and still not a loss on the Trojans' record.
“We didn't play the greatest soccer but we showed a lot of heart and a lot of fight for 110 minutes. Nonetheless I'm pleased with a result on the road. Southern Miss at times really put a lot of pressure on us and we were able to overcome,” head coach Chris Bentley said.
The Golden Eagles' pressure was evident by the shot differential, with USM out-shooting the Trojans 17-9 (SOG 5-4).
Troy will be in action next on Sunday when they host Mississippi Valley State at 1 pm at the Troy Soccer Complex. Admission to all home soccer matches is free.
