Meadows And Trojan Women Shine
3/10/2008 5:00:00 AM | Track & Field
TROY, Ala. - Troy University senior Tawanna Meadows and the Trojans women's indoor track & field field left a lasting impression upon the 2008 indoor season, shattering a record for their standing in the conference meet.
Entering the conference meet, the Trojans were picked to finish fifth and after a review of the events the Trojans were listed to compete in - it looked like a good prediction. However, someone forgot to inform the Trojans track & field program they were not supposed to score in as many events as they did. With their performance over the weekend, the Trojans finished tied for fifth in the meet - their highest finish ever - and totaled 55 points - eight more than last year - to set a school record for points scored.
Not only did the Trojans set those two marks, but several school records fell during the meet with some impressive showings from the Trojan athletes.
No performance at the meet was better than Meadows performances in the sprint competition. She became the first Troy athlete at the meet to win a gold medal, but she did not stop at one as she claimed two before the day was over. Meadows claimed gold in the 55-meter dash, running two NCAA provisional times and stabilizing her standing among the nation's elite in the Top 25 of the event. She ran a 6.82 in the preliminary round, setting a new Troy University school record; before running a 6.85 in the finals to win by .07 seconds and claim the gold.
Meadows rested for a while before running in the 200-meters. Although she missed a NCAA provisional time by just .04 seconds, she still ran impressive enough to run a 23.94 and claim a second gold medal in the event.
For her efforts, Meadows was named as the Female Co-Athlete of the Meet, and she became just the second female athlete at Troy University to meet the NCAA qualifying standards.
With her performance and the team's performance, several performances went unnoticed which included a new school record by Karla Blankenship in the pole vault. Several season bests were set as well during the meet by several different athletes.
The Trojans will now turn their attention to the outdoor season, with the exception of Meadows, who after this weekend, is ranked 21st in the nation in the 60-meter dash and will look to stay in the Top 25 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships at the University of Arkansas this weekend.
