Trojans Eighth After Opening Day in Mexico

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - The Troy University men's golf team opened the 2008 season Sunday, playing the first two rounds of the North Texas/GADO Classic in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Trojans shot a two-round team score of 587 to finish the day in eighth place.
The Trojans are 22 strokes behind Louisiana-Lafayette, which took the clubhouse lead after day one with a team score of 566. Troy leads tournament host North Texas by two strokes.
This is the third annual North Texas/GADO Classic, which is co-hosted by the University of North Texas and GADO, which is an amateur golf association regionally based in the western part of Mexico.
There are 14 American universities playing in this year's tournament in addition to three Mexican amateur teams. This is the first year that the tournament is being played at the 6,853-yard, par-72 Flamingos Golf Club in Puerto Vallarta.
Jose Toledo of New Orleans and Kyle Nicolson of Cal State Northridge shared the individual lead after the first day of play. Both players stand at four-under par. Troy junior Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe) is three shots back, in 12th place, entering the final round.
McGrady tied for the tournament lead with Jason Kuperman of UNO with two eagles on the opening day. He also tied for 7th in par four scoring.
Louisiana-Lafayette has a 13-stroke lead on second place Washington. The Huskies lead a pack of eight teams, including the Trojans, that are within 10 shots of each other after the first day of play.
The other members of the Troy squad include junior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.), who is tied for 24th at three-over 147; junior Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.), who is tied for 29th at four-over 148; senior Jordy Hayden (Livingston, Ala.), who is tied for 37th at five-over 149; and junior Justin Eaves (Louisville, Miss.), who is 66th at 16-over 160.
Parker tied for fourth in par three scoring during the first two rounds and was also tied for seventh in total birdies with eight. Hayden was 11th overall during the first two round with 25 pars.
As a team, the Trojans stand fourth in par three scoring (3.13), seventh in par four scoring (4.21) and tied for ninth in par five scoring (5.03). Troy is tied with ULL, Houston, UALR, SE Louisiana and UNO with three eagles, but is only tied for ninth with 25 birdies. The Trojans rank eighth with 125 pars.
The final round of the tournament will be completed on Monday.
