TROY, Ala. ? Members of the Troy Softball team spent their Thursday morning helping some local senior adults celebrate Valentine's Day, but the Trojans returned their focus to the field that afternoon as they prepped for their weekend tournament.
Several members of the softball team visited Troy's Colley Senior Center on Thursday morning where they passed out candy and schedule cards to the residents and watched the crowing of the Valentine's Day King and Queen.
“During their tenure here our student-athletes are provided with multiple opportunities to work with young people, but I feel it's important that we never forget our senior citizens,” Troy coach Melanie Davis said. “We must always take time to appreciate them and the sacrifices made by their generations that help us enjoy the opportunities we have today.”
The players also had an opportunity to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” with the resident pianist at the senior center.
“All of our players who participated were truly blessed as a result of giving their time today,” Davis said.
While the Trojans (2-3, 0-0 SBC) used their time in the morning to give back to the community they were fully focused in Thursday afternoon practice for their Friday match-ups with North Florida and Samford in the Bulldog Bash.
“[North Florida] is going to be a strong opponent," Davis said. "They had big wins over South Carolina and UMass last weekend, but we look forward to the challenge they bring to our team. After a tight contest with Samford earlier this week there is no doubt they will be ready to challenge us and prove they can take care of us on their home field.
Davis is also well aware of the challenge that awaits the Trojans on Saturday morning.
“We are also looking forward to a rematch with a very talented Louisville team on Saturday,” she said.
Louisville defeated the Trojans 5-0 last weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
Troy begins play in Samford's Bulldog Bash on Friday when they face North Florida at 1:15 pm. The Trojans play Samford at 5:45 pm Friday afternoon.
