TROY, Ala.- The Troy Trojans battled a tough Georgia Military team Sunday afternoon and eventually fell to the Bulldogs 49-32.
Steven Robinson carried the Bulldogs down the field on the opening possession of the game. On his seventh rush of the drive, he punched it in from one yard out for the score to give Georgia Military the early 7-0 lead capping off
an 11-play drive that covered 64 yards.
The Trojans put together an impressive 11-play drive to answer the GMC score. The drive consisted of two sacks, four third down conversions, and a nice catch by Chip Reeves on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Jones. The PAT failed when the holder dropped the ball for the 7-6 GMC lead.
Troy forced a three-and-out and marched back down the field for another score. The Trojans converted twice on fourth down with the second conversion going for the touchdown. Levi Brown threw a screen pass to Jonathan Chandler who took a hard step upfield only to look up and find a wide open Terrell Bailey. Chandler, a former quarterback, hit Bailey in stride to give the Trojans the 12-7 advantage on the 30-yard double pass.
The Trojans again forced the Bulldogs to punt, but this time D.J. McLeary came untouched to block the ball right off of Michael Donovan's foot and the ball was recovered by Erik Groat at the GMC 17-yard line setting up the 22-yard pass from Brown to Rob Byrd for the 19-7 Trojan lead.
Georgia Military quickly answered Troy's drive with a 62-yard rush by Robinson on the first play of the drive to bring the Bulldogs closer at 19-14 with 4:52 remaining in the first half.
After a Troy punt, the Bulldogs' Robinson fumbled an exchange from quarterback Dallas Walker with Groat coming up with the ball for the Trojans. GMC forced a Troy punt on the ensuing possession but then Brannon Bryan picked off a Joei Fiegler pass to give the Trojans back the ball with 1:28 left in the half.
With four ticks remaining on the clock before the half, Brown broke two tackles and scrambled to his right and found Reeves running across the middle of the field. Reeves side stepped a defender and dove into the end zone for the score to give the Trojans the 26-14 halftime lead.
Georgia Military scored on their first four possessions in the second half as they took the 42-26 lead.
Troy's Fernandus Edwards scored from four yards out with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 42-32.
GMC added a late score for the 49-32 final.
Robinson finished the day with four touchdowns to go with 160 yards on 19 carries. For the Trojans, Jones finished the day 17-of-25 for 192 yards and one touchdown while Brown was 8-of-19 for 100 yards and two scores.
Reeves led all receivers with 10 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
