TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The Troy University men's and women's cross country teams opened their season on Friday at the Crimson Classic Invitational, hosted by the University of Alabama at the Harry Pritchard Running Course.
The Troy men finished sixth in an 11-team field that included host Alabama along with LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State from the Southeastern Conference as well as Alabama State, Jacksonville State, Nicholls State, North Alabama, Samford and West Alabama. The host team won the men's race with a score of 23, followed by Mississippi State (50) and LSU (83). Troy had a total score of 181.
“The men had a good start to the year and it was a big improvement on their finish at this event last year,” assistant cross country coach Tommy Barksdale said. “The conditions were not perfect because it was hot and humid, and the course was a little wet. With the conditions the way they were, and this being our first race of the season, both teams had a pretty good start to the year.”
The Troy women also made strides, improving their finish in this event from last year. The Trojans placed 10th among 13 teams, including UAB, which won the event, and Jackson State.
The Troy men were led by sophomore Jeremy Moujoodi of Hoover, who posted a top 20 finish in the 86-runner event, 2:30 behind event winner Emmanuel Bor of Alabama, with a time of 26:21.34 on the eight-kilometer course.
The other Trojans included freshman Brett Lewis of Jonesboro, Ga. (37th, 27:24.14), junior Paul Booth of Daphne, Ala., (41st, 27:36.54), sophomore Terrence Dixon of Stone Mountain, Ga., (50th, 27:56.93), freshman Tim Landry of Hoover, Ala., (62nd, 29:13.29) and freshman Michael Niezgoda of Homewood, Ala., (71st, 30:46.45).
UAB captured the women's team race with a score of 33, followed by Alabama (87) and LSU (94). Troy posted a score of 252 for 10th.
The top runner for the Trojans in the five-kilometer event was junior Jenean Corcoran of Orlando, who finished 23rd with a time of 19:29.50, 2:12 behind event winner Lauren Blankenship of Samford.
The other Troy runners included junior Jennifer Graham of Birmingham (46th, 20:38.23), freshman Kelly Harrington of Hoover (56th, 21:09.33), sophomore Kimberly Tompkins of Enterprise, Ala., (81st, 22:45.28), freshman Brentley Collins of Fayetteville, Ga., (83rd, 22:57.72), junior Erin Clymer of Madison, Ala., (92nd, 27:21.00) and junior Jocelyn Williams of Sanford, Fla., (93rd, 28:51.45).
“The most impressive thing was the way both teams pack ran,” Barksdale said. “By doing such a good job of pack running, they cut down the time between the first and fifth runner, which is very important in running cross country.”
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Auburn Invitational
