CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Troy University Trojans needed a lift during the second half of the consolation game in the Flint Hills Resources Islander Invitational, and turned to senior Laura Lee Holman to provide that lift.
Although not the leading scorer on the night for the Trojans, Holman came off the bench to score in double figures and knocked down a pair of key three-pointers to help Troy defeat Alcorn State 66-58.
With Alcorn State leading for the majority of the half, Holman made perhaps the biggest play of the game when she stole an errant pass at midcourt. As her feet were hitting the floor, she passed the ball to Audrey Muse for an easy fastbreak lay-up to tie the game with under eight minutes to play.
Then, with the Trojans up by just one point, Holman found herself open in the corner and took a pass from Alyce Shearing to knock down a three-pointer to give Troy a 55-51 lead. The four-point deficit was as close as Alcorn State would get until the waning seconds of the game.
After controlling the first half, the Trojans withstood an Alcorn State rally that trimmed the lead to 28-27 with under one minute to play in the half. However, a pair of Muse free throws with just 48 seconds remaining push the lead back to three, before Kylie Morrissy pushed the lead to the halftime deficit of five with a running jumper with three seconds remaining.
The Trojans shot 38.6 (22-of-57) percent from the floor, and 42.3 (11-of-26) percent from behind the arc. Meanwhile, Alcorn State shot 36.8 (21-of-57) percent from the floor and 27.8 (5-of-18) percent from behind the arc.
Troy (6-3) was led by senior guard Amy Lewis with 24 points, connecting on 8-of-18 shots from the floor and 6-of-12 shots from behind the arc. Holman added 14 off the bench, hitting on 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Shearing added eight points in her first start of the season, while Muse pulled down six rebounds.
Alcorn State (2-7) was led by Tanika Nunez with 16 points, while Shawntawnee Collins added 15 and Kenisha Daniels added 10.
Troy returns to action Wednesday night, opening conference play on the road against South Alabama. The game is set to tip at 7 pm at the Mitchell Center.
