HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Troy University men's golf team slipped to 10th place with a final round 310 on Tuesday at the Sam H. Hall Invitational, sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi.
The 26-over par round on the 6,964 yard, par 71 layout at Canebreak Country Club, was 20 shots more than the Trojans' high score in Monday's first two rounds and dropped Troy to 31 shots behind tournament winner UAB.
The Blazers finished the event with a six-over-par team score of 858, one shot better than the host Golden Eagles. St. John's finished third (865) with Louisiana-Monroe (866) and Jacksonville State (872) rounding out the top five.
ULM's David McKendrick earned medalist honors for the tournament, finishing the event at 10-under par after shooting scores of 67-68-68. Jose Toledo of New Orleans, the medalist from the Troy Invitational earlier this fall, finished second, two shots back of the lead. JSU's Gonzalo Berlin, who held the lead entering the final round of the tournament, shot a closing 75 to finish third, four shots off the lead.
Troy junior Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe) turned in the Trojans' low score in both the final round and for the tournament. He closed with a two-over 73 to finish the event at four-over-par 217 in a tie for 12th place.
The rest of the Trojans stuggled in the final round. Junior Justin Eaves (Louisville, Miss.) closed with a 78 to finish at 224 in a tie with teammate Jordy Hayden (Livingston, Ala.) for 41st place. Hayden, a senior, shot a final round of 82.
