MACON, Ga. ? The Troy University men's golf team finished the three-day Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside, in eighth place, one shot ahead of fellow Sun Belt Conference member Middle Tennessee.
The tournament was played on a par 72, 7,128-yard Mark McCumber designed championship course that opened in 2005 and included nationally-ranked teams from Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech, which finished as the top three teams in the event.
Georgia captured the team title with a total score of 33-under-par 831, eight shots in front of Clemson and 10 in front of Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs had the top three players in the field and five of the nine lowest scores in the event.
“I was proud of our effort,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “We will be a better team in the long run because of having played in this tournament. We should realize that we can play with the best teams in the country, and I don't think there is any doubt that Georgia has the best team in the country.”
Troy junior Michael McGrady, from Harare, Zimbabwe, finished in a tie for 11th in the event with a three-under par score of 213. McGrady was nine shots back of tournament medalist Harris English from Georgia, who carded rounds of 65-71-68 to post a 12-under total of 204. Harris played the tournament as an individual for the Bulldogs because he is their seventh-rated player.
Georgia teammates Brian Harman (-11, 205) and Russell Henley (-10, 206) finished second and third, respectively.
McGrady finished the event five shots in front Rick Cochran of Middle Tennessee, who finished in a tie for 24th with a two-over-par score of 218. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Month, Chas Narramore of Middle Tennessee, finished 13 shots behind McGrady in a tie for 49th place.
“Michael played well again but, overall, we were mediocre as a team,” Terry said. “It seemed like we were never able to get comfortable. I don't think our guys were intimidated by the quality of the field, but I do think that we pressed a little in trying to play well.”
Troy's other players in the tournament included junior Justin Eaves (Louisville, Miss.) who finished tied for 44th overall with an eight-over score of 224. Junior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) and senior Jordy Hayden (Livingston, Ala.) finished tied for 52nd with scores of 11-over, 227. Junior Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.) finished tied for 64th with a 14-over score of 230.
The Trojans will return to action October 14-16 at the Belmont Fall Shootout in Nashville, Tenn.
“We'll face another quality field next weekend, but we should be more comfortable in that situation,” Terry said.
