CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Troy University senior Leodis McKelvin was named to the Phil Steele's Publications Mid-Season All-America first team as a punt returner.
McKelvin, a senior from Waycross, Ga., leads all of college football with a 25.6 yard per return average. He has taken two of his 10 punt return attempts back for touchdowns this season ? one for 74 yards against Oklahoma State and the other for 84 yards against Florida International.
McKelvin was joined on the first team All-America squad by Tavious Polo of Florida Atlantic. North Texas receiver Casey Fitzgerald was a fourth team pick.
In addition to the All-America teams, the publication also named mid-season All-Conference teams. The Trojans, who lead the Sun Belt Conference at the halfway point with a 3-0 league record, placed nine players on the first or second team, which tied with Arkansas State for the second most in the league.
Florida Atlantic, which is 2-0 in the league race, placed 12 players on the All-Conference team, six on first and six on the second team.
The Trojans who were named first team included quarterback Omar Haugabook, receiver Gary Banks, defensive end Shawn Todd, linebacker Boris Lee and McKelvin at punt returner. The second team picks included running back Kenny Cattouse, lineman Dion Small, McKelvin again as a defensive back and kicker Greg Whibbs.
The Trojans (4-2) are off this weekend but will resume play on Saturday, October 20, at home against North Texas for homecoming. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
