Trojans Top Warhawks in Five

MONROE, La. - Freshman Liz Leeds recorded 17 kills against the Warhawks to help lead the Trojans to victory on Thursday by scores of 30-20, 25-30, 30-19, 28-30 and 15-5.
Leeds posted a .500 hitting percentage for the match and 10 digs as the Trojans improved to 8-14 overall and 2-4 in the Sun Belt.
This was the second meeting this season for Troy and Louisiana-Monroe (3-18, 0-5 SBC), Troy won the first meeting of the season when the two met at the Mississippi State Microtel Classic.
Also assisting the Trojans on Thursday was sophomore Aubre Smith who posted 14 kills and three blocks. Smith also had a .448 hitting percentage.
Freshmen Kerry Heinz and Meghan Gilroy each notched 11 kills in the match, with Gilroy leading the team in blocks with five.
Sophomore Meghan Washlow had 44 kills, 11 digs and three service aces to assist the Trojans both offensively and defensively.
Ilima Sam Fong led the Warhawks with 21 kills but it was not enough to lead them to the win.
Troy jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but the Warhawks tied the game and traded points with the Trojans, 9-8. Then the Warhawks took the lead before Troy regained the momentum and increased its lead, 21-17.
In game two, ULM led for most of game two with a six point lead early, 9-3. The Trojans continued to battle but it was not enough as the Warhawks held onto the lead late, 25-18.
Troy came back strong in game three, lead 8-2 before ULM closed the gap, 9-7. The Trojans continued to run away with the game however, jumping out to a seven-point lead, 22-15.
Each team traded points to begin game four, 9-8 but ULM took a late lead 18-15 and although the Trojans battled it was not enough in the end, 28-27.
Troy controlled game five leading by five at the eight-point break, 8-3. Troy only allowed the Warhawks to score two more points as it took the win.
On Friday, Troy will travel to Lafayette, La., to face Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. and will then play New Orleans on Saturday in New Orleans, La., also a 7 p.m.
