ATLANTA, Ga. - The Troy University Softball Team defeated the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech in game two of a doubleheader 8-2 after falling in game one 4-2 in nine innings. For coach Melanie Davis the victory in game two marked the 500th victory for Davis since arriving at Troy.
Senior Tamra Howren belted her 21st home run of the season to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Ga. Tech tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when the Yellow Jackets hit a home run of their own to even the game at one.
Troy added a run in the top of the ninth when sophomore Brittany Krbec hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jenny Boyd and give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Ga. Tech would rally in the bottom of the ninth as the Yellow Jackets would end the game with a three run homer to right. Ga. Tech would win by the score of 4-2 to improve to 46-11 on the season.
Tech's Jessica Sallinger would get the win to improve to 24-7 on the season. Senior Kacie Flinn would get the start going five and two-thirds innings giving up only four hits and not allowing a run but would get a no-decision as Jocelyn McCallum entered the game in relief to get the loss.
Game two would see the Trojans score eight runs while racking up ten hits to defeat the Yellow Jackets 8-2. Ga. Tech successfully attempted a double steal with runners on first and third to score a run and take the early lead on the Trojans 1-0 after an inning of play.
Boyd hit an infield single to reach base in the top of the third then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for the Trojans. Howren then singled to center to drive in Boyd and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. Howren then scored on a Bonnie Belin single to right. After two and a half innings the Trojans held a 2-1 lead.
Howren singled again in the top of the fourth to drive in shortstop Caurie Miller who reached base on a walk. In the top of the fifth Troy added three more runs as Denise Vera, Jessica Lyle, and Michelle Grinage came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Powell, an error by the right fielder, and ground out by Miller. Heading to the bottom of the fifth Troy led the Ga. Tech 6-1.
Troy added two more runs in the top of the seventh as Powell hit her fifth home run of the season with Lyle on base to make the score 8-1. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as Troy would win the game 8-2 to improve to 44-19 on the season.
Sophomore Laine Harcourt got the start from the circle going six complete innings giving up seven hits and only one run while striking out four. With the win Harcourt moves to 6-3 on the season. The win also marked Coach Melanie Davis' 500th win at Troy University.
Troy will go on to Boca Raton, Fla. to take part in the Atlantic Sun Tournament where the Trojans will be the number one seed in the tournament. Troy will face sixth-seeded Jacksonville on Thursday, May 12th at 11 a.m. eastern time. Every game of the A-Sun Tournament will be broadcast live on the internet at www.UCFSports.com.
