TROY, Ala. - Senior Adam Godwin delivered a three-run triple to cap a five-run fifth inning for Troy, giving freshman left-hander Steve Morelock all the lead he needed in an 8-3 victory over Jacksonville State Wednesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Troy improved to 7-3 on the season with the victory while dropping the Gamecocks to 2-5.
Godwin's triple came on the heels of a pair of singles, a ground out and three walks from JSU starting pitcher Jon Clements (0-2).
Morelock (2-1) took advantage of the cushion, working six strong innings for the Trojans. He allowed just four hits, while walking three and striking out five. JSU did not get a runner to third base until the sixth inning, but Morelock got out of a bases loaded jam then by getting a ground ball back to the mound and an inning-ending popup.
The only JSU player Morelock was unable to solve was shortstop Jake Ball. The sophomore had three of the four hits off Morelock and ended the Trojans' shutout bit with a solo homer off junior reliever Tony Falls in the eighth inning.
Troy padded its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning off freshman Matthew Darwin. Juniors Nick Smith and Blake Green had consecutive run-scoring singles in the inning for Troy. Junior second baseman Bryan Madril accounted for the final Troy run with a solo homer in the sixth inning.
JSU added a pair of runs off Falls in the ninth. Pinch hitters Jason Horn and Cory Tucker had back-to-back one-out doubles, and Tucker later scored on a wild pitch.
Despite the late runs, Falls earned his first save of the year with three innings of relief work. He allowed three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Trojans will return to action at home this weekend with a three-game series against Saint Louis from Conference USA. Game time on Friday at Riddle-Pace Field is set for 6 p.m. The first pitch on both Saturday and Sunday is slated for 1 p.m.
