TROY, Ala. - On a beautiful spring day at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium, the Troy football team went through its paces at the end of the first week of spring drills with expected mixed results.
The Cardinal defeated the White squad 13-10 on a day when the biggest factor was a steady 20-plus mile an hour wind that blew out of the South.
Despite the wind, the Trojans worked almost exclusively on their passing game. Junior Carl Meadows guided the first team offense for the White squad against the first defense for the Cardinal. Sophomore D.T. McDowell handled the second offense for the White against the second defense for the Cardinal.
Despite a combined 325 yards passing, there was just one offense touchdown scored in the scrimmage. McDowell led an eight-play, 81 yard drive early in the third quarter that ended on a 7-yard scoring toss to junior tight end Josh Pruitt, a transfer fromGardne City (Kan.) Community College.
Meadows, who completed 12 of 27 passes for 120 yards, drove the White squad for the first score on the opening drive of the game. He completed a pair of 21-yard gains, one to Martin Teal and the other to James Earl Cray, to set up a 28-yard Greg Whibbs field goal.
Neither quarterback was able to muster much for the rest of the first half. Both were intercepted once and the second team punt unit had two punts blocked, both of which were returned for touchdowns.
Sophomore Nathan Rhoden got credit for the first block, which redshirt freshman Trinidy Thomas scooped up and returned 35 yards for a score. The second block, by transfer C.J. Davis, the St. Petersburg, Fla., native scooped up and returned himself for a 41-yard touchdown.
The ground game did not produce well in the game. Combined with the 12 total sacks, the Troy runners totaled only 53 yards on 53 carries. The leading rusher was sophomore Kenny Cattouse with 11 carries for 41 yards. Senior Joel Whingter had 26 yards on seven carries.
McDowell finished the day with 205 yards passing on 13-of-27 attempts. Meadows completed 12-of-27 for 120 yards.
Cray was the leading receiver with four catches for 86 yards while Pruitt had six receptions for 84. Gary Bans added five catches for 63 yards.
Defensively, redshirt freshman Kenny Mainor was the star, posting three sacks. Junior Gary Batts was credited with two sacks as was senior Franklin Lloyd.
The Trojans will continue spring practice with two more sessions next week before taking a week off for Spring Break. There are seven practices slated for the two weeks after spring break.
