TROY, Ala. - The Troy University baseball team opened fall practice on Sunday and will continue workouts through November 7.
Members of the Troy squad took part in a professional scout day at Riddle-Pace Field on Monday afternoon with scouts from 13 professional organizations on hand to evaluate the Trojans players.
Head coach Bobby Pierce enters his third season at Troy with only five returning players who started at least 25 games for the Trojans last year. Troy improved from 27-27 its first year under Pierce to a 36-22 mark last season.
The Trojans also return just five pitchers from last years' squad. That group combined to work 175 innings last season with a 9-9 record and a 4.78 earned run average.
To go with the total of 12 returning letter winners from last year, plus six players who were redshirted, the Trojans have 23 newcomers in fall camp. That list includes 12 freshmen, nine junior college transfers and two transfers.
The Troy squad will hold scrimmages on the weekends during fall camp, and will likely scrimmage some during the week as well. Dates and times will vary depending on weather and other factors.
The Trojans will open the 2005 campaign the weekend of February 11 with a three-game road series at McNeese State. Troy will open the home portion of the schedule the following weekend (Feb. 18-20) against Samford.
