Echols Grand Slams, Troy Sweeps Appalachian State
Â
BOONE, North Carolina- Troy (23-17, 8-7 SBC) continued to dominate at the plate earning its first series sweep of the season with a 15-2 win in game one and capped the trip with a 9-8 victory, erasing a seven-run deficit, over the Appalachian State Mountaineers, on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon.Â
Â
Game two of the series was stopped under the halted game rule in the fifth inning on Friday as Troy held a 9-2 lead. The game picked up right where it left off and Troy lost no momentum at the plate.
Â
Game two: Troy 15, Appalachian State 2
There was no shortage of home runs in the second game as Troy put up its highest number of run in the past two seasons, 15. Troy slammed three long balls in the third inning alone, plating six runs.
Â
Junior Stephanie Snyder sent one flying with one out and Brooke Echols immediately followed with her third of the season over the left field wall. A walk from Davis put a runner on with Kaylee Hussey at the plate. Hussey launched the third home run of the game and inning, scoring two runs and giving the Trojans a 7-0 lead. Madeline Porter and Katie Webb each added the fourth and fifth hits to the board six-run inning came to a close.
Â
Back-to-back solo home runs from Appalachian State cut into Troy's lead, but the Trojans answered back with a strong fifth inning.
Â
With the bases loaded on walks in the fifth, Echols blasted her second of the game, Â a grand slam, the first of her career, adding salt to the wound for the Mountaineers as Troy took a 14-2 lead. A sacrifice fly from Hussey plated the 15th and final run of the game as Grace Mirly stepped across the dish.
Â
Junior Peyton Glover had an outstanding outing in the circle, earning the start and throwing a complete game. She only allowed three hits and two runs, improving to 7-5 on the season.
Â
Troy finished the game with 11 hits, four of which were home runs, and 15 RBI led by Echols with a career-high six. Hussey and Porter each added three RBI.
Â
Game three: Troy 9, Appalachian 8
Down seven runs early, Troy fought back to overcome mother nature and defeat the Mountaineers 9-8 in the final game of the series to earn the sweep.
Â
The win was highlighted by home runs from Webb and Snyder, and two, two-RBI doubles from Snyder and Hussey.
Â
The black and yellow got off to a strong start, plating seven runs in the second inning as the cold rain started falling on the Troy defense. Jenny Dodd led off the inning with a home run, while a few fielding errors, a single and a couple of bases-loaded walks brought the other six runs across before the Trojans found a way out of the inning.
Â
They slowly stormed back, posting a three-run inning as Calhoun got on base with a double and Katie Webb smashed her first home run of the series. Snyder continued to be hot at the plate, with her third home run of the weekend.
Â
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third gave the Mountaineers their eighth and final run of the game as the Troy defense battled to keep them at bay for the remainder of the game and took advantage at the plate.
Â
A bases-loaded walk for Troy was the only run in the top of the fourth, and after a scoreless fifth, Troy knew it only had a few opportunities to make the comeback and put up five runs in the sixth.
Â
An error and bunt single put two runners on and Snyder brought both runners home with a double into right center field. A walk and another two-RBI double from Hussey tied the game at 8-8, but the Trojans weren't done yet. An error on Appalachian State allowed Echols to cross the plate giving Troy the one-run lead.
Â
The Mountaineers rallied back putting the tying run just 60 feet away and the go-ahead run at the plate, but Glover worked her magic getting a clutch strikeout to end the game.
Â
Troy went through three pitchers, with Willis earning the start, but it was Glover who picked up the win once again to move to 8-5 on the year. The junior only gave up two hits and did not allow an earned run to cross the plate. Glover finished the day with nine strikeouts.
Â
Â
QUOTABLE
"I am really proud of the fight we showed today in game three," head coach Beth Mullins said. "We put ourselves in a hole early, but Peyton Glover came in and did a great job of shutting them down and our offense just chipped away. All weekend we did a great job of having quality at bats from one through nine in the order and it showed on the scoreboard."
