MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Troy played a patient and steady round in Sunday's opener of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship at the Raven Golf Course. The Trojans led the field in pars and limited the big numbers to find themselves tied for fifth place; the top four teams following the third round advance to match play.
"You can't win the tournament in the opening round, but you can certainly lose it," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We got off to a sluggish start with the exception of Calum, but our guys battled hard and grinded out some really tough holes in the middle of the round to get their days back on track. We have a good plan in place for this golf course and we executed it well today."
Calum Masters and Dean Martin are tied for 13th place after carding rounds of 2-over 73 on the par-71 golf course. Masters raced out to 2-under after back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and No. 12 before making the turn even. He would take two bogeys on the back nine to finish at 2-over. Martin made the turn at 3-over before a birdie on the par-5 third and six straight pars closed his round.
Freshmen Connor Futrell and Mac Murphy are tied for 25th place at 5-over after Sunday's opening round. Murphy carded birdies on No. 18 and No. 2, while Futrell birdied the par-5 17th. Ike Alexander shot a 7-over to round out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 33rd place.
Conditions were less than ideal for teams as winds howled at 15 miles-per-hour plus throughout the round and rain pelted the area. The average score for the day was a 76.48 with No. 5 and No. 9 playing as the toughest two holes. Troy was able to tackle those holes with relative success as the Trojans played them at just 3-over combined as a team – those two holes produced three birdies, 36 bogeys and 31 double-bogeys or worse from the field.
Coastal Carolina shot 10-over to take the clubhouse lead following the opening round. South Alabama and UT Arlington are tied for second at 11-over, while Texas State is in fourth at 12-over. Troy and Georgia Southern are just two shots behind Texas State for the final spot in match play. The surprise of the opening round is top-seeded Arkansas State sitting in 11th place in the 12-team field.
ULM's Joao Girao, App State's Tripp Summerlin and Texas State's Alvaro Carol Estrems are tied for the individual lead at 1-under; Estremes was 6-under after his first 12 holes but took a bogey on No. 7 and a quad to close out his day on No. 9.
Troy will be in the first wave to hit the course for Monday's second round along with Texas State and Georgia Southern; the first threesome will tee off on the first hole at 7:30 a.m.
