NEW ORLEANS, La. – On the eve of postseason play, Pelayo Antuña took home Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year honors the league announced on Wednesday.
"I'm very excited for Pelayo being named the Freshman of the Year," head coach Scott Kidd said. "He was one of our top recruits this season. We have had great expectations for him and he has proven to be the player we hoped for. Winning this award just proves is a player who will bring much exposure to Troy men's tennis."
It has been a stellar season for the Gijón, Spain native in his inaugural season in a Trojan uniform as he was the team leader in the regular season with 13 wins in singles play and an overall record of 13-11.
Playing primarily out of the second spot in dual matches, Antuña posted a 5-3 record. He has an overall record of 10-6 in dual play, which also marks a team high as he is the only player with double-digit wins.
He has been one of the most versatile players for Troy with appearances in every position but the sixth and wins in four of the six spots. Antuña has a winning record of 2-1 in both the first and third positions.
The freshman has also been one of the most successful players in doubles play for Troy this year as he is tied for third on the team with 10 doubles wins, which includes a 6-3 record in dual play.
Antuña has stood out on a Trojan squad that has just two upperclassmen and has helped put together a season that saw Troy finish the regular season with a record of 12-10.
Troy has gotten hot at the right time of the year with a 7-2 record in the past nine matches. The Trojans earned the four seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and will face fifth-seeded Georgia Southern on Friday at 2 p.m. in the opening round in Peachtree City, Ga.
The two teams met earlier this season with the Trojans defeating the Eagles 4-1 on the road on March 27. For more information on Troy men's tennis, visit TroyTrojans.com.
