TROY, Alabama – Upon the conclusion of the 2016-17 regular season, the Sun Belt conference announced Monday morning Jordon Varnado and Wesley Person have been named to the All-Sun Belt team.
Â
Varnado was named to the All-Sun Belt First team while Person garnered All-Sun Belt Third team accolades. It is the first time a Troy member has been named All-Sun Belt First team since Brandon Hazzard in 2009-10.
"We are very proud of Jordon and Wesley being selected to the All-Sun Belt team," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "The Sun Belt has been one of the highest ranked mid-major leagues in the country this season, which means it's full of terrific players. The exciting thing for our program is that they are both underclassmen."Â
Â
This will be the first time Jordon Varnado has received postseason accolades following a sophomore season in which he has a team lead in points (16.2), rebounds (6.9) and blocks (46).
Â
The Brownsville, Tenn. native has been on a tear as of late as he led Troy in scoring in five of six games in the month of February. Varnado had a career-high 31 points against UL Lafayette in a game in which he set two Troy D-I records for free throws (15) and free throw attempts (18).
Â
He is one of only two players in the Sun Belt to average at least 16 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. Despite his prowess by the net, Varnado has also hit on 25 3-pointers at a 39.1 percent clip.
Â
It marks the third-consecutive season in which Person was recognized on the All-Sun Belt team and the third consecutive year he has been honored for his season of work. The junior made All-Sun Belt Second team after his sophomore season and was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and All-Sun Belt Third team his first year.
Â
Person continued his sharp shooting in his third season as the guard is averaging 13.9 points per game fueled by 77 3-pointers, the third-most in the conference.
Â
The Brantley, Ala. native has also had career numbers this season highlighted by his home performance against UT Arlington in which he had 39 points on 10 3-pointers. The 10 threes were just one shy of the Troy record set during the famous 258-point game against DeVry.
Â
The junior has been Troy's best from the free-throw line as he is hitting on a career-best 82.0 percent on his free throw attempts. He has been shooting 41.3 percent from the field this season and has played the most minutes on the team at 993.
Â
It has been a remarkable season for Troy as the 18 wins marked the highest amount since the 2009-10 season. The nine-win improvement in the regular season is the biggest improvement from a season since the 1987-88 season.
Â
Troy is back in the Sun Belt tournament as the six-seed. The Trojans (18-14, 10-8) will face Appalachian State (9-20, 4-14) in the first round of play on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Â
Any Trojan fans in New Orleans are encouraged to attend a Troy tailgate party at Fulton Alley three hours prior to each game. A shuttle will take fans to the game one hour before tip off.
