TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Saturday marked the final day of competition at the Alabama Relays for the Troy University track team. The Trojans had strong performances throughout the three day meet and capped off Saturday with several outstanding achievements.
"It was a great day for the Trojans," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "Cox continued the momentum from yesterday by placing second in the discus with a personal best. Jordan (Landburg) and Ben (Martin) were tremendous on the men's side, moving up the national rankings. Both teams continue to get better. At the end of the day, the veterans put up some huge marks, but just as impressive were the number of new athletes who are starting to see themselves in the same position."
Benjamin Martin competed in the 100-meter dash invitational, placing second with a time of 10.28 seconds. This time marks a new school record in the event for Martin, breaking the previous record that had stood since 1988. Martin is now ranked first in the Sun Belt and third in the NCAA for the men's 100-meter dash.
Jordan Landburg placed second in the 400-meter dash invitational with a time of 46.84 seconds, the fastest time in Division I this year. Landburg moves into third in Troy history in the event, behind George Bullard and the legendary Coach "O", Charles Oliver.
Troy also had impressive performances in the field events. Corina Cox, who is ranked ninth in the NCAA in discus, finished second with a 49.99-meter throw and a new season best in today's competition.
Martin also ran in the 4x100-meter relay along with Landburg, Thaddeus Curtis and Phillip Pritchett. The team placed second with a time of 40.61 seconds, moving into the top-10 in the nation in the event.
Curtis completed the men's 110-meter hurdle race in 14.51 seconds, bringing in a fourth place finish. Sean Kent placed fifth in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:25.07.
Myles Charley finished eleventh in the men's long jump with a 7.00-meter jump. Today's performance is just nine-hundredths short of his conference leading performance at the Jaguar Opener. Charley is also seventh in the NCAA in the event.
The women's distance medley team of Marsel Mosley, Sierra King, Sara Lane and Julia Ostendorf finished in fourth place with a time of 13:03.76.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Paige McMillan, Sierra King, Tiffany Slater and Alexus Cobbs took 12th at 48.41 seconds.
Other notable performances during this weekends meet were Hayes Grissom's fourth place finish and season best performance in men's javelin and Myles Charley's sixth place finish in men's triple jump.
Troy's decathletes Douglas Dyer and Samuel Johnson finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Aleeah Stigarll took ninth in the women's heptathlon.
The Trojans next meet will be the Track and Field at Tiger Track Classic at Auburn University on April 4, 2014.
