TAMPA, Fla. – The Troy track and field team opened competition at the USF Open on Thursday afternoon.
"Both athletes made the finals, and continue to make improvements," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "We looked better today and made some technical improvements from last week."
"Throwers did a great job getting the meet started," said throwers coach Shawn Williams. "Especially Demetris Elia, getting the victory in the men's hammer throw. Mariah also had a solid showing making finals and placing sixth. We still have more to come tomorrow, hopefully we can build off of today."
Demetria Elia placed first in the men's hammer throw. Elia had an outstanding performance, finishing with a 55.9-meter throw, winning by more than three meters.
Mariah Pennington competed in the women's javelin throw, bringing home a sixth place finish with a throw of 36.28 meters.
The Trojans will continue competition tomorrow. Men's javelin will kick off Friday's field events at 9 a.m. and running events will begin at 11 a.m.
