TROY, Alabama – Scott Stough (Geneva, Alabama) signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"Scott Stough is one of the best high school left-handed pitchers we have ever recruited at Troy," assistant coach Mark Smartt said. "His strikeout totals come from his ability to throw a high number of strikes with a quality breaking ball that has swing and miss capability."
Â
Stough, a left-handed pitcher at Geneva High School, enters his senior season with a 17-4 career record. He has posted 233 strikeouts in 126 innings on the mound with a 2.10 ERA and five saves. Stough was an ASWA All-State Honorable Mention in the eighth and ninth grade seasons.
Â
The 6-3, 185-pound southpaw pitched for the Wiregrass Cardinals out of Dothan, Alabama, during the summer posting a 6-0 record with a 1.54 ERA. He struck out 60 batters in 36 1/3 innings while walking just 17.
Â
"His velocity continues to increase with maturity and his deception as a pitcher will transition well to the Division I level," Smartt said. "He offers great size for a young pitcher along with a competitive quality that bodes well for his future. Scott was an early target in our recruiting efforts because of his overall ability and we believe his success will continue at Troy."
Â
Stough has also excelled academically. He has been a straight "A" student since the first grade and is a member of the BETA Club, FCCLA, FFA and SAFE.
