TROY, Alabama – Hunter Mercer (Hixson, Tennessee) signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play baseball for Troy University, head coach Bobby Pierce announced. He will join the team in 2016.
Â
"Hunter has been on our radar for several years as a member of the Chattanooga Cyclones team that plays in Troy every summer and fall," assistant coach Mark Smartt said. "He quickly established himself as an elite hitter in the class of 2015 through our evaluation process."
Â
Mercer has anchored the outfield for Baylor School for the past three seasons. He has been voted the team captain for his upcoming senior campaign. Baylor finished third in last season's state tournament.
Â
As a member of the Cyclones, Mercer earned All-Tournament honors at the World Wood Bat Association World Championship in Jupiter, Fla. He also earned the Cyclones' Best Hitter and Most Runs Produced award.
Â
"He hits the ball with authority to all parts of the field and produces runs at a high rate," Smartt said. "There is no reason for us to believe he won't transition well offensively at the college level. He has played all over the field and appears to be settled into a corner outfield type player at this level. He committed very early in the process and we are excited that he finally will join our program next year."
Â
Mercer is a member of the Baylor School honor roll with a 3.43 GPA. He also helped raise over $900 in an event to assist a teammate injured in a car accident.
